2xxx Series 2014 Aluminum Alloy Sheet For Aerospace Industry
2014 alloy is primarily used in aerospace/military applications where high strength is critical.
For commercial uses, modified 2XXX/7XXX alloys are often preferred due to better corrosion
resistance.
Properties of 2014 Aluminum Alloy
Composition:
Primarily composed of copper (3.9–5.0%), magnesium (0.2–0.8%), and manganese (0.4–1.2%).
Strengthened by precipitation hardening (θ' and S phases).
Mechanical Properties:
Tensile strength: ≥425 MPa (T6 temper)
Yield strength: ≥370 MPa
Elongation: 3–10% (varies with temper)
Corrosion Resistance:
Poor due to high copper content; requires alclad (pure aluminum cladding) or coatings for skin
applications.
Workability:
Good hot workability but challenging for cold working (annealing may be needed).
Advantages for Aircraft Skin
♦ High Strength-to-Weight Ratio:
Comparable to steel, reducing structural weight and improving fuel efficiency.
♦ Fatigue Resistance:
Suitable for cyclic aerodynamic loads during flight.
♦ Formability:
Compatible with riveting, welding (with specialized techniques), and shaping (e.g., curved
skin panels).
♦ Cost-Effectiveness:
More economical than advanced alloys like 2024 or 7075, ideal for non-critical structures.
Common Tempers
Temper Process Characteristics
T4 Solution heat treated + naturally aged High strength + good ductility
T6 Solution heat treated + artificially aged Maximum strength/hardness
O Annealed Soft state for forming
Property | 2014 | 2024 (More Common) | 7075 |
Strength | High | Medium-High | Very High |
Corrosion | Poor (Alclad) | Moderate (Alclad) | Poor (Coated) |
Cost | Moderate | Moderate | High |
Typical Use | Secondary | Primary Skin | High-Stress |
Typical Thicknesses
Aerospace: 1.5-50 mm
Machinery: 5-30 mm
Transportation: 2-20 mm
Tooling: 10-100 mm
Limitations
⚠ Poor weldability (requires special techniques)
⚠ Low corrosion resistance (needs coating)
⚠ Fast work hardening (may require annealing)
our company advantages
Technological & Production Strengths:
