Product Description

High Strength 5000 Series 5083 Aluminum Marine Plate Aluminium 5083 Sheet

5083 aluminum sheet belongs to Al-Mg series alloy. It is the highest strength corrosion-resistant

alloy among practical non-heat-treated alloys. And it is suitable for welding structures. Also, it is

worth mentioning that 5083 aluminum sheet has good resistance to seawater and low-temperature characteristics.

Key Properties of 5083 Aluminum Alloy

5083 aluminum alloy is a non-heat-treatable Al-Mg series alloy with exceptional marine-grade

characteristics:

High Strength & Toughness

Tensile strength: 275-350 MPa (varies by temper, e.g., H116/H321)

Yield strength: ≥125 MPa (O temper) to ≥215 MPa (H116)

Excellent impact/fatigue resistance for dynamic loads (e.g., wave impacts)

Superior Corrosion Resistance

High Mg content (4.0-4.9%) provides industry-leading seawater corrosion resistance

Resists stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in long-term marine exposure

Outstanding Weldability

Compatible with MIG/TIG/FSW (friction stir welding)

As-welded joint strength retains >90% of base material

No post-weld heat treatment required

Lightweight Advantage

Density: 2.66 g/cm³ (~65% lighter than steel) reduces vessel fuel consumption

Cryogenic Performance

Maintains toughness in Arctic conditions (-196°C) without brittle fracture

Thickness Guidelines for Marine Plate

Application Thickness (mm) Recommended Temper
Small yacht hull 4-6 H116/H321
Commercial ship hull 8-12 H116/H321
Deck plating 5-8 H116/O
LNG tank lining 15-25 H321
Non-load superstructure 2-5 O/H111

Material Selection & Processing Notes

Temper Selection:

H116/H321: Standard for optimized strength/corrosion resistance

O temper: For complex cold-formed shapes

Corrosion Protection:

Combine with sacrificial anodes or epoxy coatings

Welding:

Use 5356/5183 filler wires for best performance

Comparison with Other Marine Alloys

5052: Lower strength (interior/cost-sensitive uses)

6061: Heat-treatable but inferior seawater resistance

5083 dominates marine engineering due to its unmatched balance of corrosion resistance, strength,

and weldability, making it ideal for safety-critical maritime structures.
