6xxx series 6082 aluminum alloy material 6082 aluminum alloy plate
6082 aluminium alloy has the highest strength of all the 6xxx series alloys. Often referred
to as a structural alloy' 6082 is used predominantly in highly stressed applications such as
trusses, cranes and bridges. Thealloy offers excellent corrosion resistance and hasreplaced
6061 in many applications. The extruded finish is not as smooth and therefore not as aesth
-etically pleasing as other alloys in the 6xxx series.
Physical Properties
Density: 2.7 g/cm³ (lightweight, ~1/3 of steel)
Melting Range: 555–650°C
Electrical Conductivity: ~50% IACS
Thermal Conductivity: ~180 W/(m·K)
Corrosion Resistance
♦ Excellent atmospheric and marine corrosion resistance.
♦ Resistant to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
♦ Suitable for anodizing to enhance surface protection.
Weldability
♦ Compatible with TIG, MIG, and FSW (Friction Stir Welding).
♦ Post-weld strength retention: 80–90% of base material.
Temper Types
The most common tempers for 6082 aluminium are:
T6 - Solution heat treated and artificially aged
O - Soft
T4 - Solution heat treated and naturally aged to a substantially stable condition
T651 - Solution heat treated, stress relieved by stretching then artificially aged
Advantages of 6082 Aluminum
✔ High Strength (T6 temper) – Stronger than 6061, ideal for load-bearing structures.
✔ Lightweight – 1/3 the weight of steel.
✔ Superior Corrosion Resistance – Outperforms 2xxx and 7xxx series in harsh environments.
✔ Excellent Weldability – Minimal strength loss after welding.
✔ Machinability – Easy to cut, drill, and bend.
Common Thicknesses & Applications
Thickness (mm) | Typical Applications | Industries |
0.5–1.0 | Precision parts, electronic housings | Electronics, Instruments |
1.0–3.0 | Automotive & marine components | Transportation |
3.0–6.0 | Structural frames, machinery | Construction, Engineering |
6.0–12.0 | Heavy-duty structural parts | Aerospace, Rail |
>12.0 | Industrial equipment, molds | Manufacturing |
